Why the bedsheet is bigger than your mattress
A flat bedsheet needs to cover the top of the mattress and hang down on the sides so it can be tucked in. That extra fabric is called the drop. A thin mattress needs a small drop, while a thick 8 to 10 inch mattress needs a lot more. This is why two people with the same bed width may need different bedsheet sizes.
How to measure your mattress in 3 steps
- Measure the width of the mattress from left to right.
- Measure the length from head to foot.
- Measure the height (thickness) of the mattress.
Now add the height twice to both the width and the length, and add 4 to 6 inches for tucking. The bedsheet should be at least this big. For example, a 72 x 78 inch mattress that is 8 inches thick needs roughly 72 + 16 + 5 = 93 inches by 78 + 16 + 5 = 99 inches. A 100 x 108 king size bedsheet is a comfortable fit here.
Double bed sheet (90 x 108 inches)
The double bed sheet is the most popular size in Indian homes. At 90 x 108 inches it fits most standard double and queen beds with a regular mattress, and it is the most budget-friendly option. If your mattress is thin to medium and your bed is a standard double, this is usually the right choice.
